Just the Tip of the Bloomberg

Mayor has big clean-energy goals for NYC 3

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg touted clean energy Tuesday at, aptly, the National Clean Energy Summit. He said his city has issued a formal request to companies for ideas on how to source electricity from the wind, sun, and waves. "Perhaps companies will want to put wind farms atop our bridges and skyscrapers, or use the enormous potential of powerful offshore winds miles out in the Atlantic Ocean," Bloomberg said, adding, "I think it would be a thing of beauty if, when Lady Liberty looks out on the horizon, she not only welcomes new immigrants but lights their way with a torch powered by an ocean wind farm." He also touted less-sexy smart power grids, increased transmission capacity, and carbon taxation. Bloomberg can't, of course, snap his fingers and create a Green Apple; plenty of obstacles remain, including potential expense, resident resistance, permitting, and the fact that less than 18 months remain in his mayoral term. Unfazed, Bloomberg declared, "When it comes to producing clean power, we're determined to make New York the No. 1 city in the nation."

Mixing Good & Bad IdeasThe idea for wind farms atop bridges and skyscrapers is a good idea and should be done.  However, despoiling the oceans with that crap is just more destruction of the natural world and should be avoided.
And BTW, for all of you who support offshore wind, just how is the electricity supposed to get back to users?  Do you propose massive underwater cables?  Powerlines in the ocean that will further degrade it?

Wolverine, I find this curious"The idea for wind farms atop bridges and skyscrapers is a good idea and should be done.  However, despoiling the oceans with that crap is just more destruction of the natural world and should be avoided.

If you know that mankind is going to have large energy demands, and you know that those demands are not going to go away, then you have to make choices. One of the choices that might make you happy, but WILL NEVER HAPPEN, is that people are going to suddenly just throw up their hands and say "well, there's too many of us, and we shouldn't be using power at all". So, if the power has to come from somewhere, and you object to it coming from off shore wind farms, then you should logically offer an alternative.

INCLUSION, EXCLUSION?!As we address the urgent energy issues on the planet, perhaps we should remember that the biodiversity and ecology of this beautiful organic planet depends on honoring the symbiotic relationships of all species that work in concert to sustain we humans.  Wind turbines kill millions of birds as they are constructed in wind thermal routes taken by all birds, including migrating. Is there a way to avoid this?  Birds have an absolute purpose in the greater scheme of balance on this organic planet.   As we put our brilliant scientific and technological minds to resolving the massive environmental issues we have created let's keep in mind the logical end game of all new innovations.  We don't need to continue to sacrifice one element of our biodiversity just to serve our own personal needs...that's what has gotten us into this mess in the first place.  I do believe we can work at preserving/restoring the balance of nature while course correcting as we move into this new paradigm.  After all we humans are also a species within the whole system, not separate and apart from it.
