Blackout Sabbath

Rufus Wainwright’s energy campaign 2

Blackout Sabbath logoPopera sweetheart Rufus Wainwright has done Judy! Judy! Judy! and now he's doing Blackout Sabbath -- emphasis on the out. This newest venture isn't a tribute album; it's an energy conservation campaign.

Inspired by the NYC blackout in 2003, Wainwright is proposing we all turn out our lights and unplug appliances for 12 hours starting at noon on June 21, 2008, the summer solstice.

He's also asking for donations of refrigerator magnets to be handed out at an upcoming unamplified candlelit Blackout Sabbath benefit concert. The connection? He suggests lighting a candle as darkness falls that night so that you can write out a list of eco-resolutions to post to the fridge.

Already Being Done!We wish that Rufus would've talked to us about his campaign, as we've organized for 3 years now a modest, informal "Blackout" evening on the anniversary of the actual NYC Blackout.

Sure, it's very informal, self-organized, and brought together by a bunch of overworked and exhausted non-profiteers and startups, but it has been growing and there's a real sense of community behind the event, between the bars and establishments we've been working with and the crowds that come out to the gatherings.
We don't have any celeb endorsements, alas.  Maybe Rufus will join forces with our established cause?
