Not much fanfare for such an important discovery..My sister in-law works for the conservancy and sent me an e-mail. I got to hear about it before it appeared in my news sources. I have on occasion been critical of all of the pointless things people do to "save the planet." You really want to save the planet? Donate your spare change to the Nature Conservancy, stop kidding yourself that sorting your trash will make a meaningful difference. Every person who gives to the Conservancy feels good today because in small way they may have staved off an extinction. http://www.saveourbiodiversity.com

Better Groups To Which To DonateThe Center for Biological Diversity (Tucson, AZ) has probably done more to save wilderness and wildlife in the U.S. than all other groups put together over the past 10-15 years.  The Nature Conservancy, on the other hand, is a very conservative (as in right wing, not as in conservationist) environmental group and has even been caught destroying the open space that it is supposed to protect, both directly by "development," and by killing trees and drilling for gas.  See these two articles for documentation:  http://www.cdfe.org/tnc_scandal.htm

While the Conservancy probably does more good than harm, donating money to it is certainly not the best way to protect the Earth.  Aside from the failings of this group, another reason that donating to a group is not the only action needed in order to help the planet is that people need to take responsibility for their actions and stop overpopulating and overconsuming.  Without doing those two things there will be no solution to our environmental or ecological problems, because overpopulation and overconsumption are the roots of those problems.
