I am trying to figure out the ecologists antipathy to offshore drilling in the US.
To me it seems like they should support, not disparage it.
Reasons:
They favor "local" over global. Locally produced oil is transported over a shorter distance. It employs local people. It can have better quality and pollution control. More political stability.
Cons:
As far as I remember, the reasons for being opposed to offshore oil are (a) spills (b) having towers in the distance of ocean views.
A) I don't have the facts and figures, but it seems like a real long time when there's been an oil spill. And if you put the production facility near to the customer, there's less distance and time at sea for an oil tanker to have a spill. Also, I haven't heard about a derrick having a spill in a long time.
B) Well...okay, now we're all being a bunch of Ted Kennedy hypocrites. Wanting to do something environmental but not wanting our mansion in Malibu to have a steel tower obscuring 1 secant of view.
So, please, isn't it time to reanalyze the pros/cons of offshore?
