Attention Catholics 13

1. The pope is infallible.

2. The pope just had solar panels installed on the Vatican roof.

3. You must have solar panels installed on your house or you will go to hell.

Specific actions v. general approachesLast I heard:

The Vatican is in a sunny place
    The Pope is very rich
Not all Catholics live in such conditions.

That being said, I am all for the massive expansion of the use of renewable power.

Simple sillinessDR's mock mockery is just plain silly, should we be simple enough to take it literally.  Papal infallibility is a much-misunderstood concept, and has caused far more trouble than its promulgation in 1870 (which by Church standards is like last week) was worth:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papal_infallibility.
But beneath the cynical surface, DR is of course absolutely right, that it would be great if the Pope's example were to get a lot of people to start thinking positively about renewable energy sources.
And while it is certainly not true that the Pope is threatening us with eternal damnation if we do not ourselves install solar panels on our rooves, he probably would not look with tolerance on my observation that a couple of those young German yellow-T-shirted engineers are kind of cute ...

Chickens deserve our true friendship! So do fish! So do other sentient beings! Let us learn to be kind.

PHOTOVOLTAICS still do not make sense. A number of previous cost-benefit analyses for solar PV have been done, but they have not incorporated a well-grounded adjustment for the favorable timing and location of solar PV production, and many have included hard-to-justify assumptions regarding economic discounting. Unfortunately, after adjusting for these factors, the cost of solar PV remains many times higher than the market valuation of the power it produces.

Religion and climateThe emergence of conservative environmentalism is certainly critical for avoiding the worst possible impacts of climate change. As long as dealing with it remains a partisan issue, only limited progress can be made. It is hard to say "we will create and enforce a strong carbon tax" when an alternative party is willing to oppose it on the basis of political calculation alone.
As such, it is important that people of faith realize the degree to which we are harming and threatening the planet, as well as the strength of the moral imperative calling on us to do otherwise.

Environmentalismis a religion. So much for separation of church and state.

I wish...Environmentalism is a religion. So much for separation of church and state
I wish.  Then we could get a massive tax break for bein' a church.
Like the tax breaks those huge mega-churches with big-screen televisions inside former sports stadiums that rake in millions of dollars get.
Only we wouldn't use the savings on McMansions and jet planes for the pastor's family.
    LOL

I wishthey would tax you out of existence. You are a false religion.

    Why?

Why are 'we' a false religion? Because we don't have pedophile priests, aren't constantly scheming for converts, and haven't declared war to be a new sacrament?

Yeah, right...You are a false religion.

No need...You could have fooled me.
No need.  You've been there and done that...and still are...again...and again...

can we elevate the discussion to a higher plane?the comments of mreinbold seem to be trollish in nature here.  We can do better.  Tax exempt or not...
I am all for leading by example-- whether it is the pope installing solar panels, or me picking up 10 pieces of litter on my daily travels and being sure to recycle as much of it as possible.  Infallibility is too much to ask of any human being, however.  I suspect that David R. agrees with me on this point.
Did you know that picking up and recycling a single aluminum can averts 0.6 lbs of CO2 emissions?  It's a good moral reason to fish them out of the trash whenever you see them misplaced. You are doing God's work...
My church is a member of an interdenominational national group called Interfaith Power And Light, which is trying to work for actions to reduce carbon footprints and avert climate change.  I recommend it to anyone here.
I look forward to increased efficiencies of solar panels, and lower cost types such as thin films that are now being developed.  I suspect the costs for solar will continue to decrease while other non-renewable energy sources will continue to increase-- and doubt those are adequately reflected in pro-nuclear calculations such as those referenced above.  The peace of mind from converting to renewable non-polluting forms of energy may be, in fact, almost priceless.  Who says one's reward must be deferred until a heaven?

Moving toward sustainability with hopefulness, one revolution at a time.

FurthermoreBonnie prince duuhbya, whom gaawd speaks through, has solar panels AND a ground source heating/cooling system on the ranch in crawdad.
Bow and pray to the prince of the divine right of capital, bow towards crawdad and get your mind right.
Install solar panels, your ground source heating/cooling, save money, and get your great new tax credit.  Duuhbya commands it.
