Unnaturalism

Images of an evolving world by artist Don Simon 12

These images are from a series of drawings titled “Unnaturalism” by artist Don Simon. His work examines the impact of industrialization and sprawl on ecosystems. From his artist statement:

“Throughout history, particularly since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, mankind has been less than kind to our cohabitants on the planet. We build, produce, and consume with little or no regard to the impact it has on the environment. It is the nature of nature to adapt and evolve in order to survive, and we are forcing other species to deal with compromised, damaged, or destroyed ecosystems.

“This series of triptychs depicts scenes resulting from our tragic indifference. They are rendered in a beautiful and natural way, highlighting the idea that we find this acceptable. We are numb to the damage—and so, the unnatural becomes natural to us. This may be the saddest commentary of all.”

Simon, who walked away from a career in advertising to pursue art full-time five years ago, has shown his work in galleries and museums across the U.S. and in Europe. He lives and works in Medford, N.J., just outside of Philadelphia.

    Ecosystems

Green housing concepts are being rapidly implemented in an accelerating number of eco-friendly developments throughout the U.S. and Canada.  Iconic home designs are now being developed throughout North America.

Inventive eco projects are being developed on brownfields.  For example, a development project known as Dockside Green located on former industrial land adjacent to the Inner Harbor in Victoria, B.C. Canada has been designed as a green project.  The immediate environment is the adjacent Inner Harbor of Victoria which is surrounded by unsightly shipyards and old industrial buildings.  Such new developments set eco standards that will ultimately become the environmental norm for new residential buildings throughout North America and the world.  For a discussion about ecosystems, please go to http://www.onebiosphere.com

Builders and residents have become very knowledgeable about eco-friendly housing.  Environmentally conscious residents are interested in environmental and conservation housing issues and appreciative of the special features of green residential buildings.  The development philosophy involves incorporating an eco-friendly, efficient design in a reasonably priced housing complex.

animals amidst humanityDevelopers have a rule - name a new housing development for the thing that used to be there:
Pheasant Run, Chestnut Ridge, Oak Hill, White Tail Heights...
Now that you know the rule, as you drive around your town, see how often it holds true.  You'll be surprised.

ContextI hope Mr. Simon's comment about avoiding clues to time and place were tongue-in-cheek.  Every technology and design element, including particular conformations and breeds of domesticated animals, has an identifiable context.  Most obviously, the cars on his freeways date to a particular country and era. Piles of particular kinds of tires accumulate in certain places and at certain times.  Parking lot layouts and lighting follow design trends.  Whatever else might be said, about them, these pictures are firmly rooted in time and place.

All art projects «Unnaturalism» from Don Simon impress with the sense! It as nature shout about the help. Has especially impressed the project on which cows on heaps of dust are represented. Perhaps exhibitions of a similar sort will not introduce scale changes in the relation to the nature, but for the majority of people, they all the same begin stimulus to reflect on a life. If similar exhibitions force, at least some people not to litter and more to think much of the nature, means, work of the artist was not vain! On my native land, in London, not so long ago there was this exhibition, there was a notice...

Really, the theme about environmental problems on our planet is very actual now. Work on which it is represented as a whale especially was pleasant floats over the flooded city. Looks as a certain prediction of the future... Not so cheerful. All the same people do not appreciate that is given them by the nature and act only as consumers.
Here only without trees and on naked asphalt among lanterns any giraffe or a hippopotamus drawn by the artist will not survive.

Rising sea levels are a concern, especially for coastal cities. Might this be what our cities look like once sea levels rise too much for us to stay on low terrain? Will whales even survive to see our cities from above?dedicated server

From artist Don Simon: Throughout history, particularly since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, mankind has been less than kind to their cohabitants on the planet. We build, produce and consume with little or no regard to the impact it has on the environment. It is the nature of nature to adapt and evolve in order to survive, and we are forcing other species to deal with compromised, damaged or destroyed ecosystems.

Whale Fact: Pre-whaling population estimates were over 350,000 blue whales, but up to 99% of blue whales were killed during whaling efforts. Presently, there are an estimated 5-10,000 blue whales in the Southern Hemisphere, and only around 3-4,000 in the Northern Hemisphere.
