‘Lead by example’

Biden says U.S. is ready to reengage on climate change 6

Vice President Joe Biden is in Germany today for a meeting on international security issues. Climate change got a strong shout-out in his remarks. Here’s the relevant section:

We also are determined to build a sustainable future for our planet. We are prepared to once again begin to lead by example. America will act aggressively against climate change and in pursuit of energy security with like-minded nations.

Our administration’s economic stimulus package, for example, includes long-term investments in renewable energy. And we believe that’s merely a down payment. The President has directed our Environmental Protection Agency to review how we regulate emissions, start a process to raise fuel efficiency, appoint a climate envoy—and all in his first week in office, to demonstrate his commitment.

Too vagueSome more specifics would definitely be nice. Solving climate change requires rapid action to reduce emissions, and a commitment to drive such action in the face of inevitable resistance from industry and some legislators.

Lame attitude"If China wont play ball"
To quote Pogo:  "I have seen the enemy, he is us."
Keep complaining about China, overlook the fact that they have an affordable plugin hybrid.  That we can't buy until 2010?  Or maybe 2011?
Gotta protect the board room mates of the big three.  Wouldn't want them to lose their jobs.  Isn't it worth it, letting them destroy the US auto industry, we wouldn't want to fire their dumbasses and hurt their delicate feelings, boo hoo.

Disappointed...I'm mildly disappointed.  This statement lacks the same substance and detail that Senator Boxer's plan did last week.  We need to have a full and open debate on the best way to reduce carbon emissions in this country and around the globe, and that discussion must include a revenue-neutral carbon tax.  Heretofore, most of the policy debates on the hill have focused only on a cap and trade system.  We need to start talking about a carbon tax that would simultaneously avoid the evasion and market manipulation inherent to cap and trade, and incentivize the creation of new, climate-friendly technologies.  www.climatetaskforce.org.

satisfiedUnlike the last administration, this guy has brains.
Actuallly the timing is almost perfect. The cycle of temperature is at its lowest with no way out but up. This in itself will take out some denier steam in congress and a few more congressmen will jump over to more agressive climate legislation.
