How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Vault

‘Doomsday’ seed vault opens in Arctic, awaits doom 7

A so-called "doomsday" seed vault opened in the Arctic today that's designed to store up to 4.5 million seeds as a backup for the world's food crops (and other seed banks) just in case something ultra-tragic happens. The $9.1 million Svalbard Global Seed Vault was built into the side of a mountain some 620 miles from the North Pole on one of the Svalbard Islands; designers say it can withstand large earthquakes and a direct nuclear strike. Its remote location is an additional safeguard from wars and similar events that have destroyed seed vaults in other parts of the world. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai and other notables attended the opening ceremony. Proponents described the vault as a safeguard against the ravages of climate change. "Crop diversity will soon prove to be our most potent and indispensable resource for addressing climate change, water, and energy supply constraints, and for meeting the food needs of a growing population," said Cary Fowler, head of Global Crop Diversity Trust.

"Doomsday" seed vaultHow much good will this do if disaster has removed the bees, butterflies and little bats that pollinate the crops?  Is there a "doomsday vault" for them too?

Doomsday Seed VaultIsn't Svalbard where Mrs. Coulter and the Magisterium set up their experimental station to perform "intercisions?"

Re: Golden CompassYes, it is. I remember seeing it on a map right after reading the book and being really excited to find out it was a real place.

Seed saversSeed savers, the heirloom fruit and vegetable seed conservation org, ought to have their own repository.
This puts me in mind of the burning of the library at Alexandria.  Virtual libraries of all human knowledge ought to be replicated at many different geologically secure sites around the globe.
That's something Gates and Branson ought to work on, instead of investing in fuel farming.

Doomsday VaultWhat is Mansanto's role in this.  I've heard that they have an interest.

mansantoMonsanto's role is to kill heirloom seeds and to destroy deversification. When the "Iron Curtain" came down and the Russian Federation came open to world commerce on an idividual basis. They(monsanto)jumped into this gap and starting pushing and selling their hybrid varieties of seeds.Monsanato and Cargill are the largest seed companies in the world and are responsible for hierloom seeds and plants dieing out.The Seed Savers Exchange went into Russia and started saving heirloom seeds before they died from lack of useage.

We have like three varieties of corn being grown in developed countries, the same is true or close to the same numbers for oats, wheat, potatoes,ad in finitum. What this means is that if a virus or some other disease were to hit a grain crop it is possible that there would be world wide starvation due to crops dieing out.All the seeds are closely enough related that mass crop destruction is possible and then mass starvation. All in the name of the bottom line.

I can't believe......that such a structure cost 'em less than $10 million dollars.  Ya can hardly rebuild a road in America for that amount of money.
    Way to go Svalbard!
