Despite rain and cold temperatures, today’s opening of the new White House Farmers Market drew quite a crowd.

“I’ve never seen so many people so excited about fruits and vegetables!” First Lady Michelle Obama told the crowd gathered a few blocks from the White House.

Agriculture Secretary Secretary Tom Vilsack turned out for the Market’s debut, along with White House chefs Sam Kass and Bill Yosses. The White House Farmer’s Market will run through the fall.

Mrs. Obama selected some fresh produce from The Farm at Sunnyside, an organic producer from Rappahannock, Va. “A farmers market is not just about vegetables, it’s about community,” said the First Lady, who was, in fact, the First Customer.

    Nice job Michelle.

As meaningful policies prove tough to come by as illustrated by the misdirected political pettiness via health care 'debate' it's nice to know our leaders can still lead by example (you lie!). The White House garden and Farmer's Market is a hopeful sign during turbulent times.

By now, many people know that Jimmy Carter put solar panels on the White House (and subsequently, Reagan took them down).

We can only hope the Obama's will set an equally profound example by converting the White House into a net-zero abode.

A living roof, photovoltaics, and solar hot water system would be welcome additions to 1600 Greensylvania Avenue...

Love the White House Garden and the new Farmer's Market. Now can we please overhaul agricultural subsidies so we support the stuff that is good for us instead of the junk (corn syrup, etc.) that makes us obese and sick? Michael Pollan's right that healthier agricultural policies would make healthcare reform much more affordable. Food for thought.

This is pretty amazing. Cool 'lead by example' initiative. Anyone know if the market is going to be a regular thing? And I wonder if growers who come will have to have their produce xrayed or something.

Nice. I bet the farmers get a pretty good price there, too. Would love to know what those potatoes and carrots sell for... probably a better price than I'm getting, but my friends and neighbors appreciate the chance to buy super-fresh local produce at supermarket prices.

Very interesting and a great way to get the White House to mix with the community. Also a kind of symbol of the Green movement. Most likely very expensive greens!
