FOUNDATION AND CORPORATE RELATIONS MANAGER

Grist seeks a skilled, experienced, and entrepreneurial Foundation and Corporate Relations Manager. This person will be the linchpin of a team that is dedicated to renewing and expanding Grist's base of institutional support.

Job Description:

Reporting to the Director of Development, the Foundation and Corporate Relations Manager is responsible for developing and managing Grist's foundation and corporate support. The Manager will identify and cultivate foundations and corporations that can support Grist's work, develop grant proposals and other funding requests, and maintain relationships with all current foundation donors and corporate supporters. This is a full-time position in our downtown Seattle office.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Work with Director of Development and other staff to design and implement plans for Grist's foundation and corporate program
  • Conduct preliminary funder research and evaluate foundation and corporate prospects
  • Vet potential foundation and corporation supporters with senior staff, the Board of Directors, and other volunteers and funders
  • Work collaboratively with program and development staff to craft messages for donors and funders through an annual case for support
  • Produce high-quality written communication for funders at all stages of the development process, including letters of inquiry, proposals for foundation and corporate prospects, and mid-year and final reports back to funders
  • Collect and synthesize information about Grist's programs as needed for proposals, grant reports, and supplementary communication materials
  • Lead face-to-face meetings with funders and manage relationships
  • Provide support to the President, Development Director, and Board members for in-person meetings with funders
  • Manage organized and efficient operational systems to ensure accurate development records and timely communication with funded
  • Manage a deadline-driven calendar of all development activities related to foundations and corporations
  • Oversee and help maintain all foundation and corporate database records
  • Analyze success of foundation and corporate efforts in meeting development goals
  • Provide writing support for other fundraising initiatives
  • Assist in building and managing an advisory board of online media experts
Required Qualifications:

  • BA or BS degree required
  • Two to five years of development experience desirable
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Obsessive attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and juggle several projects at once with a spirit of flexibility and a positive outlook
  • Experience working with donor databases (we use Salesforce) and expertise with MS Office, including PowerPoint

DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

Grist seeks a personable, entrepreneurial, experienced Development Director with proven success designing and executing a full range of philanthropic fundraising strategies.

Job Description:

The Development Director will be responsible for designing and executing Grist's fundraising strategy. This is an exciting time at Grist: we've set forth on a multi-year, organization-wide campaign we call Grist 2.0. Grist has grown fast and will continue to do so. As part of our strategic plan, we expect to significantly grow our contributed income within three years. Reporting to the president and working closely with board members, the director will be part of Grist's management team and supervise our growing development staff. We're looking for someone who can quickly build on the organization's success and rapid growth and play a hands-on role in expanding the current development program. Priorities will include creating a major-donor program and extending our innovative e-philanthropy program.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter with an energetic personality who is comfortable working both independently and as part of a team. Experience and contacts in the progressive funding community are an asset. The Development Director will work out of our Seattle office with some travel required (approximately 20 percent).

Responsibilities Include:

  • Design and manage development strategy, plan, calendar, and budget
  • Create and manage major-donor program, including cultivation of prospects and organizing fundraising events nationwide
  • Provide activities support for president and volunteers in fundraising activities
  • Identify, research, cultivate, solicit and steward foundation and corporate donors, including previous donors and new prospects
  • Develop innovative strategies to raise money online from readership
  • Manage production of materials including letters of inquiry, grant proposals, reports, and other communications
  • Serve as fundraising liaison to Grist's board and fundraising committee, including preparation of meeting presentations and special board projects
Required Qualifications:

  • 5-7 years of fundraising experience, with proven success in the areas of individual and foundation giving
  • Demonstrated ability to raise over $4 million annually
  • Experience in building and leading a development team
  • Experience managing and motivating boards and volunteers in fundraising initiatives
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail, strong time-management and organizational skills
  • Experience with fundraising databases (Salesforce preferred), and strong comfort with MS Office, including PowerPoint
  • Strong acumen for financial reports, and ability to create reports reflecting fundraising activities

VICE PRESIDENT OF MARKETING AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

Grist seeks a personable, experienced, entrepreneurial Vice President of Marketing and Business Development. This person will be charged with extending Grist's leadership in the green media space.

Job Description:

Grist's Vice President of Marketing and Business Development will lead the business development and marketing team during an exciting time of expansion and transition, as the magazine publishes more content, builds more partnerships, invests in new technologies, and solidifies our standing as the gathering place for the next generation of environmentalists.

We're looking for a resourceful person who doggedly seeks out opportunities, enjoys keeping lots of balls in the air at one time, and manages relationships with aplomb. We're seeking someone who, when faced with obstacles, responds with creative, well-considered ideas, keeping projects moving forward. The Vice President will take the lead in developing and implementing a strategic marketing and sales strategy with the primary goals of increasing traffic and revenue. If this appeals to you and you have a deep interest in environmental causes, you may be Grist's next VP of Sales and Marketing.

Responsibilities Include:

  1. Provide strategic leadership, direction, and management for Grist's business-development and marketing functions
  2. Develop and implement plans that increase traffic and revenue to meet the organization's growth goals
  3. Monitor and analyze performance of all marketing and sales initiatives, and develop strategies to evaluate program efficiency and maximize ROI
  4. Identify, negotiate, and close major strategic partnerships and agreements that expand our reach and/or increase our revenue
  5. Monitor deal integration and ongoing partner interactions to ensure that Grist continues to derive maximum value from its partner relationships
  6. Implement creative marketing campaigns and other means to expand our reach (direct and indirect) and increase our page views, using both online and offline strategies
  7. Staff, manage, and lead the business development and marketing teams; mentor, coach, and build the team's capacity
  8. Oversee public relations and brand initiatives
  9. Partner with internal editoria, production, and technology teams to achieve goals
Required Qualifications:

This position requires experience in the following areas:

  1. Bachelor's degree required, MBA desired
  2. 7-10 years of experience in business development, marketing, and sales; media and online experience highly desired
  3. Demonstrated leadership experience, including managing staff, budgets, and programs
  4. Exceptional analytical, strategic-thinking, and financial-modeling skills
  5. Strong knowledge of online marketing (including SEO and SEM) and audience development, including metrics
  6. Experience generating forecasts and budgets, and setting and meeting revenue goals
  7. Proven success in establishing and nurturing partnerships
  8. Experience with Web 2.0 and social-media tools; ability to provide leadership in developing Grist's strategies in these areas
  9. Ability to relate to, motivate, and inspire others throughout the organization, particularly in the editorial and creative departments; ability to leverage resources within the organization efficiently and effectively
