1. How is Grist supported?

Grist receives support from readers, foundations, syndication partners, and advertisers.

2. Does Grist have an annual report?

Grist does not publish an annual report. However, you can view our organizational profile at GuideStar, a national database of nonprofit organizations.

3. What will my donation support?

Your donation will directly support the publication of an award-winning, independent magazine devoted to environmental reporting.

  • Editorial content published each weekday, including in-depth investigative reporting, commentary, environmental advice, summaries of breaking news stories, Q&As with activists, book reviews, and lots more -- all free of charge;
  • Coverage on all things environmental, from pollution to population, biodiversity to sustainable agriculture, energy to global climate change, environmental justice to environmental economics
  • A top-notch team of editors and writers based at Grist HQ in Seattle, committed to covering environmental news with irreverence, intelligence, and a fresh perspective; and
  • Well-respected and talented freelance reporters scattered the world 'round.
4. Is my contribution tax-deductible?

Grist is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) public charity; therefore, your contribution may be tax-deductible. Please check with your tax adviser to find out more.

5. What is Grist's Employer Identification Number (EIN), also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number?

Our Employer Identification Number is 06-1664153.

6. Why does my credit-card statement read "Groundspring.org" instead of "Grist Magazine" when I make an online donation to Grist?

Grist works with Groundspring.org to process your online donation.

7. Is it safe and secure for me to donate online to Grist?

In a word: yes. Groundspring.org uses Secure Sockets Layer technology to encrypt all data submitted to and from our donations web page. SSL renders donors' personal information, including credit-card information, unreadable to any outsiders. SSL is supported by all major web browsers, including Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. (To find out if your browser is connected to a secure transaction server, look for a locked gold padlock in the lower right-hand corner of your IE or Firefox browser.)

9. Can I make a recurring online donation?

Yes, on our donations web page, you can schedule a monthly, quarterly, or yearly gift to Grist. In fact, we encourage it!

10. Can I make a donation by mail or phone?

You can mail a check or money order made payable to "Grist" to:

Unfortunately, we are not able to process gifts by phone at this time.

11. Can I make a gift in honor or in memory of someone?

Yes, you can choose either option from our online donations page or by including the information with your check or money order sent to Grist HQ.

12. Can I purchase an additional premium item?

Grist premium items are used exclusively as thank-you gifts in select fundraising appeals and are not currently available for sale.

13. My company matches my gifts to 501(c)(3) organizations. Is Grist eligible to receive this type of match?

Yes, the IRS recognizes Grist as a public charity under section 501(c)(3) of the tax code. Thanks for asking!

14. Can I make a gift of appreciated securities to Grist?

Yes, Grist has a stock brokerage account established to accept stocks or bonds. Please contact us at or 206.876.2020 x215 for DTC instructions.

15. Will Grist rent, sell, or trade my personal information?
